This regional meeting of judges and chief justices was organized to deliberate on adjudicating transnational organised crime and Illicit financial flows.
The AML-CFT ESCAY was one of the main sponsors of the 3-day meeting, in collaboration with the Kenya Judiciary Academy and other sponsors. We brought together judicial officers from 21 African countries, who discussed and shared experiences, the challenges and emerging issues in adjudicating organised crimes and cases involving illicit financial flows.
The judiciary plays a critical role in disrupting organised crimes. And given the transnational nature of organised crime, regional and international cooperation amongst law enforcement agencies and judicial institutions is essential. It will take a network to fight a network!
For judicial officers, exposure to international judicial networks and forums to share best practices, exchange ideas, build networks and learn from each other is invaluable to keep judicial officers aware of global trends in organised crime and how different jurisdictions are dealing with the emerging issues.
Kenya’s Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, Honourable CJ Martha Koome was present to officially open this workshop and to give her opening remarks. Also present at the ceremony and throughout the workshop was Honourable Tewodoros Meheret Kebede, the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Kenya’s Deputy Chief Justice Honourable Philomena Mwilu among many distinguished judicial officers from Kenya and the invited 21 states.
Our team leader Frédéric BAYARD gave opening remarks, representing the European Commission and the AML-CFT ESCAY Project. He reiterated that this conference is in line with our project’s mandate to work with states across Africa, building their capacity to ‘follow the money’ in order to disrupt illicit financial flows
