In July, we held a week-long webinar on International Cooperation and Information Sharing on Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, Illicit Financial Flows and Asset Recovery.
International cooperation and information sharing on organised crime, money laundering, terrorist financing, corruption and Illicit financial flows is a big challenge for countries in east, central and southern Africa.
According to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)’s consolidated assessment rating, all assessed countries of this region are rated either low or medium in regard to international information sharing and cooperation.
This therefore demands an intervention to strengthen national capacities to take up international cooperation and information sharing. And this was the basis and objective of our training: to strengthen the capacity of countries in the region in international cooperation and information sharing. We invited practitioners from Financial Intelligence Units, Law Enforcement Agencies, Public Prosecution Authorities, National Central Authorities for international cooperation and Asset Recovery Agencies from our partner and beneficiary countries.
Over 150 public officials from east, central and southern Africa countries joined the training, learning the basics and concepts of mutual legal assistance and extradition, international cooperation on criminal matters among many other subjects.
We are very grateful to the European Commission for support and funding to facilitate such training as this, to help countries in their fight against illicit financial flows generated by organised crimes.
A second round of training on the same subject, for francophone countries, is scheduled for next month.
