Workshop on Counterterrorism and Criminal Justice

We kicked off our 3-day workshop, organised to sensitise Kenya’s leading judges on terrorism, terrorism financing and counter terrorism.
This workshop is part of a series of workshops and training, which, since 2019, we have jointly organised with the Kenya Judiciary Academy and the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division.

This workshop will seek to increase the judges’ understanding of criminal terrorist networks, their modus operandi and how their illicit finances flow.

To enrich the interactive dialogue over the next 3 days, the programme will incorporate the voices, experiences and expertise of officers from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Anti-Terror Unit, the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Asset Recovery Agency among others. These invited officers bring invaluable insights into the training and give the judges an opportunity to hear from officers in the front-line of fighting terrorism, and key players in the criminal justice sector.

We were privileged this morning to have Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Renson Ingonga, who also officially opened the workshop. Also present were distinguished justices and judges, including Hon Justice (Dr) Smokin Wanjala, who is also the Director General of the Kenya Judiciary Academy. Also present were the Principal Judge of the High Court, Hon Eric Ogola; Jodi Young of the US DoJ, Chukukere K Unamba-Oparah of the The Attorney General Alliance – Africa Programme , CS. Jennifer Gitiri, HSC of the Asset Recovery Agency, Harrison KIARIE of the ODPP among others.

Representing the AML CFT ESCAY was Alma Wanyama and Paul Gitobu, who also read the opening speech on behalf of the Project leader Frédéric BAYARD.

We are honoured and proud to be part of this important workshop!
